Last night’s meeting of Psychedelic Professionals in Denver was an important one, with Dr. Jon Treem from the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Lead Physician for the Colorado Palliative Care Clinic. He described the real limitations patients and their families currently face at the end of life choosing ways to ease the transition and find more peace and acceptance.
Dr. Treem and a packed room full of physicians, hospice, and medical providers all confirmed our traditional system is only designed to treat sick people but is not at all prepared to heal or care for the un-well. 😞
If we truly wish to help those who are suffering, mental health cannot continue to be medicalized. We need a new paradigm of collaborative team care, with multi-disciplinary practitioners who offer patients what they need for internal challenges that can’t be tracked on medical charts. This care needs to be affordable and accessible to those who want it- hello Insurance plans!?
The process of dying (and also living) will forever be an existential experience that requires support from a network of Humans, trained and prepared to hold space for difficult emotions and awareness. 🙌
The use of psychedelics, particularly psilocybin🍄, has been scientifically shown to help people become more connected with their soul’s journey and purpose, and feel more at ease in their own bodies, and with others. So WHY would we ever criminalize or prevent something so powerful and healing to a world that is suffering so greatly?
Thoughts to ponder on this Full Moon Friday…🌝
