Broken Arms and How We Heal

by | Oct 9, 2024 | Uncategorized

Keblar Pass, Colorado (from my recent leaf-peeping tour)🍁

It’s officially autumn and I’m enjoying the crisp air, vibrant colors, and change of season here in the Rockies.  It also feels wonderful to finally sit down and write -without pain!

My summer was derailed 2 months ago after I broke my right (dominant) arm in a mountain biking accident.  I was attempting to be friendly when a lady at the bottom of the trail put her hand out, leaving me one-handed to brake suddenly. 😲 Please folks, never high-five anyone riding a bike…

Before my injury, I told several friends I was “juggling too much” with my three jobs, one daughter heading off to college, managing my AirBnb, and attending school.  So life, as it does, decided to remind me you can’t juggle with one arm and I was forced to slow down and put aside a few of those balls!

You never know how much you appreciate a body part until you injure it!  During the long 6+ weeks of bone and tendon healing, I could not easily do basic things for myself.  Daily activities like drying my hair, getting dressed, cutting food, opening bottles, and especially typing caused me extreme pain.  My word for 2024 was Ask, and how appropriate, as I had to ask a lot of friends to help do my heavy lifting and tasks during the past few months!

Now that I’m on the home stretch and my mobility and strength is returning, and I’m even riding my bike (cautiously!), I’m in awe of how the body heals itself if you give it the time, care and space it needs to do its thing.  I’ve been treating pain and injury most of my career, so I know you can’t rush healing, but you certainly can support it.  Acupuncture, massage, supplements, and infrared light helped me.  Also good sleep, a healthy diet, and keeping a positive-ish mindset during the process, especially with the sheer frustration of having to divert and adapt my normally active lifestyle.  And yes, I did have a few minor meltdowns if I’m being totally honest…

Just like our bodies have this intuitive power to heal when great care is taken, so does our mind.  In fact, mind and body are inextricably linked when it comes to facilitating change and wellness.

In psychedelic medicine guiding and coaching, we typically use a somatic or body-focused approach to get clients into a more clear of state of awareness through locating where in their body the deeper, important memories and emotions are stored.   When we can identify where exactly in the physical body we feel an experienced state, we can gradually move and unwind mental and physical discomfort locked inside as energetic patterns.

Acupuncturists know the body holds energetic blockages, which is why we use needles to move energy through your inner channels and create a more balanced state of flow in the mind and body.

You can learn to move energy yourself, when you become aware of what emotions you are holding in your body.  Understand how thought patterns are creating energy roadblocks, and practice techniques to get your mind and body in sync.   The end result is having an internal knowing of what is in your best interest to do- or not do- to get your desired result.

With my broken wing I have become more embodied than ever…needing to wake daily and listen to what my body is telling me I can handle for the day.  Pain is my messenger and tells me to slow down, and ease is my signal to push to a new level of activity.  My energy levels are also dictating what I should do each day and even who I should be spending my time with!   It’s a great reminder that when we slow down and check in with our bodies- we get answers from within.  We then don’t need as much external direction and feedback from others to live our best life.

I hope with the energy of fall that naturally brings us inward, you can begin to rest, breathe deeply, and listen more to your own internal body messages, responding from a place of clarity and inner wisdom.  Let me know if I can help.

Love, grace and aspen magic🍂

Amie
