I’m on the other side of a move.
It wasn’t an out-of-town move, I’m only 10 minutes from my old house, but I might as well have moved to Egypt with all the planning, coordination, and heavy lifting that took place. Over the past months, I sold and donated tons of furniture, clothing, and items I no longer needed (why on earth did I own three whisks?) and boxed up the rest of my house into a small storage unit. On multiple trips in borrowed trucks, I transported all of my now basic belongings into my new, bright beautiful home that I am sharing with my friend. Phew. Deep breath.
I sit here now, so very grateful as I enjoy stunning views of the Wasatch Mountains out my windows…✨
If there is one thing I’ve learned from moving so many times over the past decades, it’s the power of the purge and the reset. Yes, moving is a bitch— it’s exhausting and overwhelming and all that —but it’s also the perfect opportunity to look at your personal world, accumulations, and priorities and figure out what needs to stay and what needs to GO. When you move (body or home), your energy shifts. You release what doesn’t serve you.
I always feel so much energetically lighter after a move, as I’ve cleared out all my clutter and passed along things to people who need and appreciate what I no longer use. As I packed up closets of clothes, shoes, bags, books, and sports gear, a full kitchen, and all the knick-knacks it was a great reminder to stop buying so damn much stuff—I have everything I need and more. Keep it simple. Less is best.
This move has also come during a year of great awakening for me. A time when it seems life is happening for me, not to me. Big shifts in my relationships and professional life are keeping me on my toes. My assumptions and beliefs about people and systems are being tested. Truths are being revealed to me whether I’m ready for them or not. The changes, disappointments, and betrayals haven’t all been comfortable or pleasant, but in the rearview mirror, they were all gifts. I am keenly aware that life is preparing me for a new, greater evolution through a series of grand shake-ups.
Life is happening for you, not to you.✨
Remember this when you feel like life isn’t going your way. Perhaps it is? When doors close it may mean you are supposed to open new ones. If someone in your life isn’t being honest or genuine, could this mean you have holes in your own integrity that need patching? When you are forced to let go of something you held dear, and then realize you didn’t ever truly need it at all, you liberate a lot of attachments and fears and create space for the really good stuff to come in.
With the autumn season upon us, we transition from the easygoing vibe of summer to the more introspective energy of fall. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, autumn is associated with the Lung (yin) and Large Intestine (yang) energy meridians. The Lung controls our respiration and helps regulate the flow of water in our body and the Large Intestine releases our toxins and wastes. These organs process what our body no longer needs so we keep only what is nourishing and essential. Energetically, the two organs work together so that we can let go and make room for the new.
Look inward and outward to sift through what you might still be hanging on in your life that may have already outlived its purpose. Give yourself an energetic ‘move’ and clear out the waste. See if you can soften your grip around your rigid beliefs and be open to receiving something new. Surrender and allow life to happen for you.
Fantastic insight, less is more!
Well said, Amie. I wish you continued growth on this journey through life!
